Portland Pride Parade Monitor Training

Why We Need You!

  • Safety: parade monitors can observe potential problems

  • Communication: Before and during the parade, monitors will be a link from their groups to the parade coordinators

  • Efficiency/Cost: Pride Northwest would need to employ over 100 temporary staff to adequately monitor the parade. By community organizations monitoring their own groups, this keeps parade entry fees low

Number of Monitors

  • Up to 25 persons marching = 1 Contingent Monitors

  • 26 to 50 persons marching = 2 Contingent Monitors

  • 51 to 100 persons marching = 4 Contingent Monitors

  • 100+ = Add another 1 Contingent Monitors per 20 persons

  • Additionally, 1 Contingent Monitor is required for every two vehicles

Check-in

  • Lead Monitor to check in at Pride Northwest check in tent, see staging map for location

  • Verify location, direction of vehicles, etc.

Performances

  • Contingents are allowed two performances along the parade route for a duration of up to 30 seconds. Pride Northwest actively monitors the route to ensure order and timeliness. Any contingent violating this policy, will be asked to proceed. If violations continue, the contingent may be excluded from the parade without refund. Your coopPassing out of Materials

  • Parade Contingents and participants are PROHIBITED from throwing, or projecting by any means, any items from their parade entries. Per the City of Portland, "participants on foot are allowed to hand out candy and/or promotional items before and/or during the parade using the sidewalk and/or within 3 feet of the curb. Items may only pass from hand-to-hand. Under no circumstances are items to be thrown or tossed anywhere along the parade route."

Responsibilities of Monitors

  • Provide information as needed from their group to the Parade Coordinator

  • Make sure all members of their contingent are ready to march

  • Account for everyone and all vehicles in your group in case of an emergency– Have I/We checked that our vehicle(s) are in working order?

  • Direct members of contingent to clean up after themselves

  • Keep contingent together and moving during march

Other Issues

  • Monitors are responsible for making sure that their contingent is as stated on their registration. Noncompliancewith your group’s paid registration or parade regulations may result in exclusion from the parade without refund.

What time will we begin to march?

The Portland Pride Parade will begin marching at EXACTLY 11:00 AM. Contingents must be ready to march by NO LATER than 10:30 AM.

When should our marchers begin arriving?

Parade Coordinators will be on site no later than 8 am. Your group can start gathering then. You will not be allowed to bring any vehicles into the Parade Lineup Area after 10:15 AM! *NOTE-if you have an oversized vehicle, such as a large truck, trailer, or other float vehicle, that vehicle MUST arrive by 9:00 AM!

Where is our location on the Staging Map?

  • Go to Staging Area Map - Available first week of June

  • Find your Contingent in the lineup

  • Your number is listed beside your Contingent’s Name (Remember this number!)

  • Scroll down to the parade staging map below

  • Find where your number would fit between numbers

Example: I find out that my Contingent Number is 49. I look on the map and see 45 → 50. My Contingent will line up within the area between the number 45 and 50. Because my number is closer to 50 than to 45, I will line up closer to where 50 is.

What if someone is late?

Walking

  • People that are registered with your contingent are allowed to join your contingent until 10:45AM

Vehicles

  • Entrance into Lineup Area will close at 10:15 AM, for oversized vehicles such as a large truck, trailer, or other float vehicle, that vehicle MUST arrive by 9:00 AM.

  • No vehicles will be allowed into this area after this point. No exceptions.
